For those of you who don't know (or have forgotten) what's going on, click here.

I just sent Mr. Butler an e-mail a few minutes ago. The text is posted below. Cross your fingers, folks! ^_^

Dear Mr. Butler,

Hello. My name is Jonathan and I'm a member of the official Alternity homepage (http://alternityrpg.net). I imagine that finding an e-mail related to Alternity in your inbox was the last thing you expected from today. However, there was a question that several of the site members (including myself) were curious about: Would TSR be willing to finish converting the Alternity books into PDFs for sale through sites such as RPGNow.com?

Every so often, we have someone visit the forums and propose that we offer to buy the rights to print our own Alternity books and every time someone has to give that person a lengthy explanation of why we can't do that (we eventually posted the explanation as a "sticky" so everyone can see it). I came up with the idea to ask for a limited re-printing of the books but was told that would cost too much (after doing some more research, I discovered exactly how expensive, too).

After talking with some of the more informed site members (as well as the site admin), I was directed to you because you were the person in charge of converting the hardcopies into ESDs. Below is a link to the discussion if you would like to see it for yourself.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I look forward to hearing back from you.

Go you! Maybe they'll listen too, especially if we can get Apoc to 'mention' it when he's there on his externing.

Won't happen- WoTC told him to stop and they have final say. You should contact them.

Here's the reply I got today:

Greetings!

Wizards stopped the ESD program before we were finished due to lots of internal issues. Primarily, the costs for converting the ESDs couldn't be recovered in the same quarter as they paid us for the work, and that made them less and less likely to take on extra work.

At the time, the quality of the ESDs were the best that could be done given the resources we had to work with. New software has allowed us to make much higher quality scans, but redoing all the ESDs wasn't something that WotC was interested in taking on.

Regarding licensing Alternity for reprints, that's not something WotC wanted to do (d20 Futures has replaced their SF interest). At this point, I'm sure they'd just refer those interested in licensing Alternity to the free d20 Futures OGL.

That's big business for you, not interested in doing something because they won't see immediate profit. Insane and stupid, but that's the way things go. It's actually somewhat short-sighted of them in many ways, especially because they half-funded the ESD's.

Why won't companies learn from stupid stuff like this? I mean, there are over 2000 members here alone, and probably a thousand more that haven't found this site or TS.net, and yet more who lurk.

What they don't realize is that releasing the products as serious, quality work would help enhance an "outdated" product, yes, but build more confidence in the ability of WOTC to finish things they start and do a quality job of it.

Then again, RPGnow doesn't seem to like my credit card, so I can't buy them anyways, so maybe it's a moot point... but still, I'm sure you see what I'm saying.

For a PDF reprint, with no promotion of any kind, that would basically remain available and generating sales forever? That's insane.

Welcome to the typically short-sighted world of the American corporation. Pretty much any other country's commercial mindset would have at least looked to the EOFY (sorry, End Of Fiscal Year) bottom line.

I wouldn't bother trying to contact WoTC with this request- they seem to be ignoring similar email moreso of late.

I wonder if they do have the original files for the books somewhere or if they were destroyed (or liberated by an ex-employee)? As much as the books looked nice, it would have been much better if they picked different colors for the sidebars (in suboptimal light I have trouble reading the skills chart).

How are the scans for the PH's sidebars?

It's for this reason that I despise large corporations, who seem to have no thought for the fans.

Riles me right up... makes me want to BURN something.

Dammit, where's some fluid and a steel trashcan when you need one?

Hmmm...I shall have to poke around the offices. I start my externship next Monday. While I doubt I could do anything, if my plan to become General Counsel works, I will have power. It might take 10 years though. :(
