A little crowing is in order. Don Meyer, coach of our local Uni's BB team, is now the winningest coach in NCAA history at 903. He beats out the previous incumbent, Bobby Knight (yes, the chair throwing tantrum king himself) in five fewer seasons, with a better win/loss ratio, while being a better (or at least nicer) person.

Oh, and surviving a major car accident and fighting cancer.

I herewith award an AP to all my players in general celebration--further notes will be made in the games themselves.

While I commend him for his oustanding record, I do have one gripe... winningest? I'm pretty sure winningest isn't a word.

It is a word, and actually a grammatically correct one as well.

Which is just another point for the general weirdness of the English language.

Also a relatively new word, according to that dictionary article. Interesting.

So, if somebody comes along and beats that record... does that make them... more winningester? winningestful? ;)

No, they'll just be the winningest then.

Interestingly, 'winningest' used to be used to refer to a young lady's personality--similar to 'winsome'. English is definitely a linguistic mutant.

English has always been so, from the invasion of the Normans.

Edit: Actually, before even the Romans. All languages change, though, constantly, no matter how much we try to maintain an "official" version.

A little further bragging is in order, as NSU is ranked 1 in the North Central region. Combined with our record, this pretty much guarantees a number one seed in the Div II tournament.

Oh, by the way--we also have a tradition of winning tournaments.

If in twenty years time young people are walking around in their anti-grav boots and eating their space-burgers replying, "Roffle" and "Lole" to amusing statements I shall be forced to assume the mask and mantle of the mightly Dictionor! - Scourge of Geekspeak and Protector of the Common Word.

I was thinking red and black, with an open tome for an emblem. My superpower would be to fling appalling puns at enemies until they impale themselves on blunt parking bollards or stuff their ears with something not designed to enter the aural canal and cause discomfort. Anyone who has taken part in any PBEM game I play, most notably TB's Fallout game can vouch for the terrible power I wield for good.

Erm, back on track. What's a 903 score, and how is it worked out? For those of us whose football is kicked, rucked or holder tackled six times?
