I've been dabbling with creating a board game that would have fairly simple rules and yet it would be oriented toward thinking and strategy (with a bit of luck involved to make it exciting of course...) Here is what I have so far. I am hoping to finish on the rules write up (the part where timing is explained) and design of the figures (they will be paper cut-outs at the start) in two weeks.

Text

The object of the game is to eliminate all the opponent’s pieces from the board, also referred to as the battlefield. The battlefield is a triangular board consisting of 48 red and white fields. The opponent’s piece is eliminated once it is pushed off the board or it can’t be moved to unoccupied field as a result of loss of a combat.

Each player has 20 pieces which are divided in 7 trumps and 13 pawns. At the start of the game 5 of these pieces are placed on the battlefield and used to conduct the game. Players can not have more trumps than pawns at the beginning of the game.

Players alternate turns to place their pieces on the unoccupied fields of the board starting with the white player. Note that you do not have to announce which pieces are you playing and that you can place the pieces anywhere on the battlefield. Once each player has maximum number of allowed pieces on board the game begins, white player starting first.
Players alternate turns by performing an action with one of their pieces. These actions are:
-move: the player moves his piece to an unoccupied field
-initiate combat: the player moves his piece to a field occupied by his opponent’s piece
-on guard: the player nominates one of his pieces to be on guard. If the piece is attacked it defends with its attack score.

The combat
Once two opposing pieces occupy the same field the combat is immediately resolved. Note that combat can occur even if it wasn’t initiated by one of the players (such as piece being moved into occupied field by the effect of Chaos trump).
When one of the players initiates the combat his piece uses the attack score (ATK) and the opponents piece uses his defense score (DEF) to resolve the combat. Both players roll the six-sided dice and add the result to their respective scores. The higher number wins. If ® has been rolled, apply the effect of the piece to the game and reroll the dice until you get the number. In case the final scores are the same a stalemate occurs and both pieces remain locked in the field. If the attacker won he can push the opposing piece to one adjacent unoccupied field in any direction. If this would cause the piece to fall of the battlefield or if there are no unoccupied fields available the piece is removed from the game. If the attacker looses, then his piece is pushed back to the field from which the attack was initiated.
In case that the combat is initiated from the stalemate, event or effect of the trump both pieces use their DEF score.

Breaking the stalemate
When in stalemate the pieces remain on the same field and cannot be moved until one of the players initiates the combat of the locked pieces. Pieces in stalemate cannot be moved due to events and cannot be targeted by the effects of other pieces. Once the stalemate is broken the winner of the combat can push the opposing pieces to any unoccupied adjacent field or off the board even if the winner was originally the defending piece.

Events
Events are abilities of pawns that take effect once the specific conditions on the battlefield are met. They are triggered after the player moves a piece that has the event stated on its sheet. If the conditions of the event are met but player hasn’t moved the piece triggering it, the event takes no effect. If the event would cause pieces to occupy the same field the combat is initiated automatically and must be resolved before other effects of the event are resolved.

Sample pieces(red=trump, blue=pawn):

Chaos
atk/def:3/3
®:if you win this combat take another turn

When you move Chaos into unoccupied field players then move all the pieces not locked in stalemate by one field towards the closest battlefield edge. If the piece would drop move it one field towards the center of the battlefield

Judge
atk/def: 3/4
®: place any piece from the battlefield to a field of your choice

When you place Judge on the battlefield you can replace any one of the opponents pawns on board with another pawn he hasn't used.

Sentinel
atk/def:1/4
®: in next combat your pawn gains +1atk or +1def

event: if sentinel is placed on guard while on the field of his color then all adjacent allied pieces can reroll their combat dice if they get involved in combat during opponents next turn

Each player has a set of pieces to choose from: 5 or 7 trumps and 10 or 13 pawns(still weighing the number of pieces the game should have). You can place only five on board. Trumps and pawns are clearly defined but during the setup phase your opponenet does not know which pieces will be placed on board. Setup is aslo important part og the game since you need to watch closely what your opponent places on board and adjust your game accordingly.
There is distinct difference between trumps and pawns. In general trumps have higher combat values and stronger in game abilities. Pawns are weaker and have event related abilities. i.e. Chaos can change placement of pieces on board every time he moves and Judge can disrupt opponents strategy by replacing one of the figures on board with different one. Sentinel can activate his ability only when certain conditions are met.

Some more pieces:

Warlord
atk/def:5/4
®:opposing piece rerolls his combat die and keeps the lower score

All allied pawns adjacent to warlord have +1atk and +1def

the Lady
atk/def:2/4
®:if you lose combat you may have opponent move one of your pawns instead of the Lady. The opponent may then move the piece involved in the combat with the Lady to any adjacent field.

When you place the Lady on the battlefield you may place one additional pawn on the board.

the Deceiver
atk/def:2/3
®: you may take opponents combat roll as your own. Declare this before you reroll ®. The opponent then takes your combat roll as his.

You may replace the Deceiver on the battlefield with any other trump that hasn't been placed on it. This counts as an action.

Brute
atk/def:3/2
®: if you win this combat push opposing piece two fields away

event: if Brute eliminates the trump from the game you may move Brute to adjacent unoccupied field

Mirrormask
atk/def:2/2
®: copy and activate ® ability of any pawn on the battlefield

event: if all your pieces are on the different color field you may move one of opponents trumps to unoccupied adjacent field.

Martyr
atk/def:2/1
®: if you loose this combat you can choose the field to which the Maryr is pushed

event: if Martyr is not in stalemate and your trump would be eliminated from the game you may remove Martyr from the game instead and place the trump on the field Martur was occupying
event:

Soulblade
atk/def:3/3
®: if Soulblade would lose combat it is considered stalemate instead

event: if soulblade is your last piece on the battlefield and is not locked in stalemate, as an action, you may remove it from the game and place the trump you haven't used on the field Soulblade was occupying.

I forgot to post complete rules for this in case anyone wants to try. Just print out some some reference cards, triangular board as per description and assemble different markers for each of the pieces.
The ® symbol replaces 6 on a die.
